When a patient comes in for an Invisalign consultation, two questions we always get asked are: "Will Invisalign work for my teeth?" and "How long will my treatment take?"
And we completely understand why. Whether you're an adult juggling work meetings and a busy social life, or a parent trying to map out a teenager’s busy schedule, having a clear timeline matters.
The honest answer? Most Invisalign treatments in our Main Line office take roughly 12 to 18 months.
That said, teeth don't move on a strict schedule. Depending on your treatment goals, your timeline could be as short as 6 months or extend beyond 2 years.
Here is what really dictates the clock, and what you can do from day one to keep things moving on track.
When designing your personalized treatment plan, I evaluate more than just the teeth visible in your smile. I also assess your dental alignment, how your jaws function together, and how your teeth fit within your overall facial structure.
A few critical things determine how long that journey takes:
If you had braces years ago and noticed your lower front teeth crowding slightly, that's often a straightforward fix. We can usually correct minor spacing or crowding from relapse in 6 months.
However, if we are correcting a deep overbite, open bite, protruding teeth, crossbite, or severely rotated teeth, biology takes time. Moving the crowns of the teeth is the easy part; gently remodeling the underlying bone and guiding the roots into healthy positions requires patience. Rushing orthodontic movement isn't just ineffective—it's unsafe for your roots, gums, and overall dental health.
I always tell our patients: aligners work as well as you wear them. If you aren't eating, drinking, or brushing, the trays should be on your teeth.
Invisalign relies on continuous, light pressure. To stay on schedule, the trays need to be seated on your teeth for 20 to 22 hours every single day. That leaves roughly 2 hours across the entire day for meals, snacks, and brushing. If trays spend too much time sitting on a napkin during lunch or dinner, tooth movement stalls, and those missed hours quickly add weeks to your finish date and reduce the overall quality of the treatment.
We can program the most precise digital tooth movements in the world, but your bone physiology ultimately controls the timing. Some patients' teeth track effortlessly from tray one; others require a little extra time for the bone to remodel around stubborn movements.
Once you finish your initial series of aligners, you are usually 90% of the way there. But because we aim for an ideal, long-term bite—not just "mostly straight"—we often scan for a short set of refinement aligners. Think of refinements as the final detailing phase. They usually add just a few months, but they make all the difference in your final result.
You have far more control over your Invisalign timeline than traditional braces patients do. If you want to finish on time (or even ahead of schedule), focus on these 3 habits:
At the end of the day, a great orthodontic outcome isn't a race—it’s about giving you a healthy, functional bite and a confident smile that lasts forever.
If you are curious about your personal timeline, the best first step is to schedule a consultation at our Bryn Mawr office. During that initial visit, we will take records, including an iTero digital scan, to map out your teeth in 3D and show you a preview of your final smile simulation before you even start treatment.
